Is Online Gambling in the US Legal?
Technically speaking, online gambling is not illegal in the United States. However, the situation is a bit more complicated than that.
Because gambling is not federally regulated, each state in the US has its own set of rules around what is allowed. The overturn of PASPA in 2018 opened up the doors for many states to regulate their own online sportsbooks, but legislation around online casinos and poker rooms has taken a bit longer.

States where gambling has been fully regulated have a wide range of gambling options. This includes land-based and tribal casinos, sportsbooks, and poker rooms, as well state-sanctioned online platforms for gambling.
Some states have regulated select gambling activities, but are still lax in other areas. For example, New Hampshire has legalized sports betting, but has yet to introduce regulations around online casinos. States with partially regulated status usually still have land-based casinos, and players can still access offshore gambling sites.

Currently, 25 states have regulated online sports betting, with seven states regulating online casinos, and five regulating poker rooms.
Online casinos are legal and regulated in Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Nevada, and West Virginia. States like Indiana and Illinois are expected to start supporting online gambling sites in 2023.
